How to Apply for a Visa to Bhutan

Traveling to Bhutan requires a valid visa issued prior to arrival (except for select nationalities). As part of Bhutan’s regulated tourism system, visa processing is handled through licensed Bhutanese tour operators.

Please Note: Visa rules and requirements may change. For the most current information applicable to your travel dates and nationality, please contact our team. We guide you through the entire process.

Who Needs a Visa?

All international travelers require a visa to enter Bhutan except:

  • Indian nationals

  • Bangladeshi nationals

  • Maldivian nationals

Thai and Swiss nationals holding diplomatic or official passports are visa-exempt. Ordinary passport holders must apply in advance.

How the Visa Process Works

Bhutan visas are processed before your arrival. You cannot apply independently without a local sponsor or tour operator.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Confirm your travel dates and itinerary.

  2. Send us a clear copy of your passport (valid for at least 6 months).

  3. Complete the visa application form.

  4. Pay the applicable Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) and visa fees.

  5. We submit your application to the Bhutanese authorities.

Processing typically takes up to two working days once documents are submitted.

Visa Approval & Arrival

Once approved, you will receive a Visa Clearance Letter.
Your actual visa is stamped upon arrival at:

  • Paro International Airport

  • Other designated ports of entry

Please carry a printed copy of your visa clearance letter when traveling.

Visa Extensions

If you need to extend your stay in Bhutan, we will assist in coordinating with the relevant authorities. Extensions require official approval and valid justification.
