Detailed 12 Day Bhutan Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival in Paro & Cultural Sightseeing

Welcome to the Land of the Thunder Dragon! Upon arrival at Paro International Airport—famous for its dramatic Himalayan views—you’ll be greeted by our representative and transferred to your hotel.

Explore:

  • National Museum of Bhutan

  • Rinpung Dzong (Paro Dzong) overlooking the river

  • Kyichu Lhakhang, Bhutan’s oldest temple

Evening stroll through Paro town and local markets.
Overnight in Paro.

Day 2 – Trek Begins: Sharna Zampa to Thangthangkha

Distance: 17 km | Time: ~6 hrs
Altitude: 2,810m → 3,610m

Drive to Sharna Zampa, the trailhead of the Jomolhari Trek. Follow the Paro Chhu River through forested valleys and mountain scenery. Trek permits are arranged in advance.

Camp overnight at Thangthangkha.

Day 3 – Thangthangkha to Jangothang

Distance: 19 km | Time: ~6 hrs
Altitude: 4,040m

Today offers breathtaking views of towering Himalayan peaks. Enjoy lunch in a yak-herders’ camp and interact with locals if present.

Arrive at Jangothang, one of Bhutan’s most scenic campsites, with stunning views of Mount Jomolhari and Jichu Drake.

Day 4 – Acclimatization Day at Jangothang

Rest and explore the surrounding valleys and alpine lakes on short hikes. Watch grazing yaks and sheep against dramatic mountain backdrops—perfect for photography and acclimatization.

Day 5 – Jangothang to Lingshi via Nyile La Pass

Distance: 18 km | Time: ~6 hrs
Pass Height: 4,890m

Cross the spectacular Nyile La Pass before descending into the Lingshi Basin. Spot nomadic yak herders’ black tents and trek toward historic Lingshi Dzong.

Camp beneath snow-capped Mount Tserimgang.

Day 6 – Challenging Trek: Lingshi to Shodu via Yale La

Distance: 22 km | Time: up to 9 hrs
Pass Height: 4,930m

Today is the toughest but most rewarding day. Cross Yale La Pass and descend toward the shimmering Khedo Tsho Lake before reaching Shodu campsite.

Day 7 – Shodu to Barshong Ruins

Distance: 14 km | Time: ~4 hrs

A gentler descent today leads to the atmospheric ruins of Barshong Dzong, once an important fortress protecting Bhutan’s interior.

Plenty of time to explore the site and surrounding forest.

Day 8 – Barshong to Thimphu Chu River

Distance: 15 km | Time: ~5 hrs

Trek alongside the scenic Thimphu Chu River through lush vegetation, maintaining a steady altitude around 3,600m.

Day 9 – Final Trek: Thimphu Chu River to Dodena → Thimphu

Complete your final hiking section to Dodena before driving to Bhutan’s capital, Thimphu.

Day 10 – Thimphu Sightseeing & Drive to Paro

Explore Bhutan’s cultural heart:

  • National Memorial Chorten

  • Textile Museum

  • Institute of Traditional Medicine

After lunch, drive back to Paro.

Day 11 – Tiger’s Nest Monastery Hike

Hike about 2.5 hours up to the iconic Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest) Monastery, clinging dramatically to a cliff face.

Pause at the viewpoint café halfway for panoramic photos before continuing to Bhutan’s most sacred site.

Day 12 – Departure from Bhutan

Transfer to the airport for your onward flight.
